		<description>I remember Robert with enormous respect and great affection.  He was a superb scholar, a dedicated colleague, and a lover of opera.  What more could one ever ask.

I shall miss him, as I know so many people will.

		<description>Now living in the UK and a Reseach Fellow at the University of Liverpool, I was saddened to learn of the death of my Concordia University colleague (pre his University of Montreal time as the Chairman of the English Department there).  We both specialised in 19th century American literature.  We shared an admiration for Herman Melville. Via his book on Melville and other publications, Robert pioneered gay studies in American literature.  He was a man of cham, integrity, and courage.</description>
